You may have heard about Kari’s Law and Ray Baum’s Act, do you wonder if they apply to you? Have you discussed this with your legal team? What is your current 911 routing behavior for an end-user during an emergency?
Kari’s Law – which was signed into law on February 16, 2019 and effective as of February 16, 2020 -requires owners of a Multi-line Telephone System (MLTS) to allow direct 911 dialing without enforcing additional button pushes for an outside line. With Kari’s Law, 911 must be available for users to dial in the emergency. Additionally, once the 911 call is made, a secondary party must be notified (either internal or external to the company) that an emergency call was made and must include the location of the call and to provide a call-back number.
Ray Baum’s act builds upon Kari’s Law, which adds the requirement for the MLTS to send dispatchable location information to the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) to help first responders to get to the emergency as quickly and as efficiently as possible. This requirement of the PSAP receiving data from the MTLS is from the FCC.
If you have phones without DIDs, don’t worry, you can still be compliant. To be compliant, you will need to use either Cisco’s Unified Communications Manager’s (CUCM) Native Emergency Calling feature or use an application such as Cisco Emergency Responder or equivalent. If you are currently without this feature set and you have Cisco access switches, SMP can help. We can look at moving your system to Cisco Flex licensing, which may come bundled with your licensing (depending on your current deployment size.)
Cisco’s UCM software has rolled out enhancements to make these requirements easier to work through. For more information check out the below articles. Follow-up with your legal team. And if you’d like SMP to help audit your system and recommend a custom-designed course of action which is right-sized for your company (both in size and direction), give us a call we’d be happy to help.
